________________ Vol. XXXVII, 2014 Life and Works of Prof. Nagin J. Shah Hemcandra Acarya Gold Medal and Award (B.L. Institute) of Rs. 51,000 for his contribution to Jain Philosophy by writing excellent works. Furthermore he loved to teach and under his tutelage seven students completed their research for Ph.D. As a person he shied away from public discussions and attention. Rather he loved to have one to one discussion with highly intellectual minds. Throughout his lifetime he was invited by various Indian and foreign universities but he declined them as it was not his personal characteristics to be in public attention. In spite of all his accolades he always maintained a low profile and believed in Gandhian philosophy of life. He shall always be cherished for his simplicity and, a very practical and ideal attitude towards people, towards his work and towards his life. પ્રો.નગીનદાસ જીવણલાલ શાહ (સને 1931-2014) ભારતીયદર્શન, જૈનવિદ્યા અને સંસ્કૃત ભાષાના સુપ્રસિદ્ધ વિદ્વાન પ્રાધ્યાપક ડૉ.નગીનદાસ જીવણલાલ શાહનો જન્મ ૧૩મી જાન્યુઆરી સન ૧૯૩૧ના દિવસે સુરેન્દ્રનગર જિલ્લાના સાયલા ગામે થયો હતો. પૂજ્ય માણેકમુનિ સંસ્થાપિત વટવા જૈન આશ્રમમાં રહી વટવા શાળામાં પ્રાથમિક અભ્યાસ કર્યો અને તે પછી શેઠ ચીમનલાલ નગીનદાસ છાત્રાલયમાં રહી એસ.એસ.સી. સુધી અભ્યાસ કર્યો. ત્યાર પછી અમદાવાદ સ્થિત શ્રી મહાવીર જૈન વિદ્યાલયમાં રહી બી.એ. અને એમ.એ.નો અભ્યાસ કર્યો. ગુજરાત કૉલેજમાંથી ગુજરાત યુનિવર્સિટીની બી.એ.ની મુખ્ય વિષય સંસ્કૃત સાથેની પરીક્ષા આપી, જેમાં પ્રથમ વર્ગમાં આખી યુનિવર્સિટીમાં બીજો ક્રમ મેળવ્યો. તેઓ ગુજરાત યુનિવર્સિટીમાં “ફેલો” તરીકે નિમાયા. ગુજરાત યુનિવર્સિટીની એમ.એ.ની પરીક્ષામાં પ્રથમ વર્ગમાં ઉત્તીર્ણ થયા અને સંસ્કૃતમાં સૌથી વધુ ગુણ મેળવવા બદલ યુનિવર્સિટીનું એમ.એલ. પ્રાઈઝ મેળવ્યું. ૧૯૫૮માં જામનગરની સરકારી ડી.કે.વી. કૉલેજમાં સંસ્કૃતના વ્યાખ્યાતા તરીકે તેઓ નિમાયા. સંસ્કૃતમાં પીએચ.ડી. કરવા માટે તેમણે સરકારી વ્યાખ્યાતાની નોકરી છોડી અને લા.દ. ભારતીય વિદ્યામંદિરમાં જોડાયા. ત્યાં તેમની રિસર્ચ ઑફિસર તરીકેની નિમણૂક કરવામાં આવી. ભારતીય તત્ત્વજ્ઞાનના ઊંડા અને સંનિષ્ઠ વિદ્વાન તેમજ મહાન ચિંતક પંડિતશ્રી સુખલાલજીના માર્ગદર્શન હેઠળ તેમણે લખેલો અને ગુજરાત યુનિવર્સિટીએ પીએચ.ડી.ની પદવી માટે માન્ય રાખેલો મહાનિબંધ - "Akalanka's Criticism of Dharmkirti's Philosophy" ૧૯૬૭માં પ્રકાશિત થયો. તેને હાજીમે નાકામુરા, ડગ્લાસ દયે, સાતકોડિ મુકર્જી જેવા આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય વિદ્વાનોએ પ્રશંસાપૂર્વક આવકાર્યો અને દેશવિદેશના રિસર્ચ જર્નલોમાં તેની સમીક્ષાઓ પ્રગટ થઈ. હાજીએ નાકામુરાએ લખ્યું : The authors achievements are wonderful and successful in many respects.
