________________ ओक्टोबर-२०१६ १८५ structures that were raised under the Hoysaļa occupation of Tirucirāpalli, for example the third east gopuram, Ranganātha complex, Srirangam (plate 16). In the Nāyaka times this socalled nandyāvarta is once again met, as in the interior of the rangamandapa of the Rāmasvāmi temple at Kumbhakoņam (A.D. 1620) (plate 15)." Like the svastika, the nandyāvarta, too, figures in the grilles showing mixed motifs as in a Sakhandaka jāla from the east façade of the Sambhavanātha temple, Jaisalmer (A. D. 1441, plate 258). Outside India, in rare instances, it occurs in the jāla patterns in Islamic architecture.” It likewise figures in the jālis, at least in one Islamic building, in the Mughal period. '3 (Luckily, the “socalled nandyāvarta' was not used by Hitler and the Nazis; or else it would have met the same fate as the 'svastika,' one of the most ancient and highly esteemed auspicious Indian symbols, which is now identified with the symbol of Nazism and hence abhorred in the West.) स्वस्तिक नंद्यावर्त अक्षय स्वस्तिक * * *
