The six external and six internal austerities are prescribed by Tirthankar. They should be practiced without remorse and without any expectation of reward. The six types of external austerities are: Anasan To practice fourfold dietetic restrictions which are total or partial fast Unodary To eat less than required amount Vrutisamkshept To restrict the number of items to eat Rastyag Complete or partial abstention of tasty foods; Kayaklesh To tolerate physical pain voluntarily and Samlinta To be modest and to follow restraints with respect to material (Dravya), space (Kshetra), time (Kaal) & feelings (Bhaav).
