Bhandarkar 150th Birth-Anniversary Volume 8 usiņam-pariyāve nam paridāhena tajjie ghimsu vā pariyāvenam sāyam no paridevae 9 unhabhitatte [ Ee JĀS, v. 1. -0) mehāvi sināņam no vi (vi no Ee] patthae gāyam no parisincejja по viejja ya appayam8 The commentators assign specialized meanings to usina-p., paridāhena, as well as to ghimsu; their explanations are reflected in Jacobi's translation : " If he suffers from the heat of hot summer, he should not lament the loss of comfort. .) or fan A wise man, suffering from heat should not long for a bath himself.” ... In this development, there can be little doubt that (8a-b) usina paritāveņa, paridaheņa and (9a ) unhabhitatte are explanatory and redundant synonyms or doublets (usiņa unha ), emphasizing the inconveniences suffered by the ascetic “terrified by the extreme burning of the heat, by (its ) extreme incandescence, ... scorched and burnt by the heat ". The oriental " phonology and morphology of 8a-b (usina ... tajjie) perhaps point to a comparatively older layer, the first pāda being glossed, in 9a, with the more common unhâbhitatte. In turn these two pādas themselves look like anticipated paraphrases of the following ghiņsu vā pariyāveņam, the exact meaning of which was becoming blurred. - As for the syntax of 8c, it is difficult to decide whether it is free or stereotyped. Naturally, it is possible that, at the time of the compilation of Utt 2, the authentic old meaning of ghimsu was still preserved (at least in learned circles ), and the editors introduced a tmesis, 10 the initial pada 8a, usiņam-pariyāvenam, being actually meant as an exact preliminary translation ( perhaps provided by some cautious well-versed scholar). But there can be little doubt that such syntax, combined with the fact that ghimsu was an isolated, as well as archaic, lexeme, was doomed to misinterpretations by those who were not pandits. 8. Scil. = ātmānam, Santisūri Tīkā; = alpakam Nemicandra ?. Pi 401 reads appayam (atmānam) only in Jaita Māhārāstri : apparently it is already amg. 9. I would have been tempted to read unha-tatto, cf. the v. L E JAS and the * Tikās, quoted JĀS n. 17 : the compound would then hava & western garb. It seems wiser to abide by -tatte, considering the “amg.” diaeresis in sinanam (95) and evolution (gätran ) gāyam (9c); cf. Pi 133; 292. 10. AUG 2. 1. 30; CPD Epilegomena 33*, ubi alia; Sadd 767. 17-22; 781. 8-9.
