to snow or (bitter) cold;& it is feared, and the speaker seeks protection against it.
In contrast, Turner's proposed etymology, economic as it is, appears to be quite plausible : for amg. ghimsu could well continue an o. i. a. *ghrmsu-, based on the weak grade corresponding to the full grade from which Ved. ghramsá- is derived. For the latter, Mayrhofer refers to ghrņoti (EWA I 364 ): *ghrmsu-, then, perhaps has the same (rare) suffix -su- known due to RV dákşu-, dhákşu(paroxytone, brennend ", AIG 2. 2. 926; from DAH),. The adjective, with an original meaning « burning", might have evolved into the corresponding substantive, “the burning, the burp " (compare tapyatú-, ved. "glühend ", TS
Glut", AIG 2. 2. 667; and IAL 5686, s. v. tapyatú-, "hot", where Turner also alleges *tapnu-, cf. Av. tafnu.“ fever”).5
In fact, from a synchronic point of view, it might prove preferable to deriye both ghramsá- and *ghrmsu- from a base ghrams. (cf. AIG 2. 2. 922 ); in which case *ghrmsu- might from the start have been either an adjective or a substantive (cf. rşú- " nur im RV und nur im GPI.) Glut' oder Strahl's indú-, vidhú-..., ib 476).
Whatever that may be, the above assumed connexion between v. ghramsá. and amg. ghimsu tallies perfectly with the oldest amg. data, as evidenced in two of the senior "texts of the Svetāmbara canon, viz the Sūyagada (1. 4. 2. 10) and the Uttarajjhāyā (Ee 2.8c. = 360, JAS 100 = 38c), the exact meaning of which has generally not been fully grasped.

4 Sūy. 1. 4 is the well known chapter itthi-parinnā, or instruction(s) concerning the right monastic behaviour towards ) women. It is written in that " older form of the āryā” which soon became obsolete so that many alterations crept into a number of passages, as shown in a masterly way by L. Alsdorf.
The reedition of, and critical commentary on, Sūy 1.4 published by this scholar in IIJ 2 (1958), 249-270 will help solve the riddle of ghimsu.
