This is an introduction to spiritual disciplines and practices of an ordinary householder. These observances create communal hormony and peace in society and the nation. 2. NAISTHIKA SRAVAKA (Allegiant layman)
One who fullfils his religious duties with constant vigilance is a Naisthika sravaka (allegiant layman). In order to prepare himself for the ascetic life, the householder goes further to observe the eleven spiritual stages (pratimas).

The classification is made on the basis of Siksavrata. In the Digambara tradition Acarya Kundakunda included the Sallekhana into Siksavratas. Vasunandi accordingly accepted it as the third pratima. But Umasvami, Samantabhadra and other Acaryas did not agree to Kundakunda's view. Kundunda, Kartikeya, Samantabhadra etc. named the sixth pratima as ratribhuktityaga but in the later period, its meaning was slightly changed.
