ग्वालियर-दुर्गके कुछ जैनमूर्ति-निर्माता एवं महाकवि रइधू

जैनमूर्तिकला की दृष्टि से ग्वालियर - दुर्गका अपना विशेष महत्त्व है। वहाँ पर प्राप्त सभी जैन मूर्तियों
के प्राचीन इतिहासका साङ्गोपाङ्ग अध्ययन तो अभी तक नहीं हो सका है, फिर भी इसके प्रमाण उपलब्ध हैं कि नौवीं सदी ईस्वीसे वहाँ उक्त कलाका उत्तरोत्तर विकास होता रहा। ११-१२वीं सदी में तो ग्वालियर-नगर अथवा दुर्गमें ही नहीं बल्कि समस्त मध्यभारतमें जैनमूर्तिकलाके साथ-साथ जैनधर्म एवं साहित्यका भी प्रचुर प्रचार रहा। इस सन्दर्भ में इम्पीरियल गजैटियर'का निम्न उल्लेख महत्त्वपूर्ण है:
“In the eleventh and twelveth centuries the Jain Religion was the cheif form of worship of the highest classes in Central India and the remains of temples and images belonging to this sect are with all over the agency"
आगे चलकर उसके प्रचर रूपसे विकसित होनेके प्रमाण १५-१६वीं सदी में पुनः प्राप्त होते हैं, जो कई दृष्टियोंसे महत्त्वपूर्ण हैं। ग्वालियर-दुर्गमें उपलब्ध जैन मूर्तियाँ तथा उनके अभिलेखोंका गहन अध्ययन किया जाय तो तत्कालीन मध्यभारतीय इतिहासकी कई प्रचलित मान्यताओं पर नया प्रकाश पड़

उक्त गजेटियरमें जिस समयकी बात कही गई है, उस समय वहाँकी प्रधान जातियों में जैन-जातिकी गणना होती थी। उनकी आयु, समृद्धि, स्वास्थ्य एवं शिक्षाके सम्बन्धमें भी निम्न उल्लेख दृष्टव्य हैं :
"The age statistics show that the Jainas, who are the richest and best nourished community, live the longest, while the Animists and Hindus show the greatest fecundity," (Page 348.)
...Omitting Christians and others (chiefly Parsis) Jainas are the best educated community 19% being Literate, while Mosalmans come next with 8% followed by Hindus with 3% (Page 348).
