प्रश्न : बहिरंग निमित्त किसे कहते हैं ?
उत्तर : जो अन्तरंग निमित्त का सहकारी हो उसे बहिरंग निमित्त कहते हैं जैसे सम्यग्दर्शन की उत्पत्ति में सद्गुरुओं का उपदेश, जिनेन्द्र बिम्ब का दर्शन आदि । बहिरंग निमित्त के मिलने पर कार्य की सिद्धि अनिवार्य रूप से हो, यह नियम नहीं है परन्तु अन्तरङ्ग निमित्त के मिलने पर कार्य की सिद्धि नियम से होती है। अन्तरंग निमित्त के मिलने पर बहिरंग निमित्त कुछ भी हो सकता है।

उत्तर : अन्तरंग निमित्त मिलाने के लिये बहिरंग निमित्त के मिलाने का पुरुषार्थ करना आवश्यक है। जैसे पुत्र - प्राप्ति के लिये विवाहादि करना आवश्यक है पर विवाहादि करने पर पुत्र हो ही जावे, यह नियम नहीं है। इतना अवश्य हैं कि अन्तरंग निमित्त की अनुकूलता मिलने पर पुत्र की उत्पत्ति होने में विवाहादि बाह्य निमित्त का मिलना आवश्यक है |
