ही रहता है और दुर आगे ता है। पीला रोग से ही छुटता और दूसरा बड़े-बड़े कुश्तीबाजों से हाथ मिलाता है। एक दीर्घजीवी बमता है और दूसरा सौ यत्न होते रहने पर भी यम का अतिथि बन जाता है । एक की इच्छा संमत होती है और दूसरे की असंग्रत । जो शक्ति महावीर, बुद्ध और शंकराचार्य में थी, वह उनके माता-पिता में नहीं थी। हेमचन्द्राचार्य की प्रतिमा के कारण उनके माता-पिता नहीं माने जा सकते । उनके गुरु भी उनकी प्रतिभा के मुख्य कारण नहीं थे, क्योंकि देवचन्द्र सूरि के उनके सिवाय और भी शिष्य थे । फिर क्या कारण है कि दूसरे शिष्यों के नाम लोग जानते तक नहीं और हेमचन्द्राचार्य का नाम प्रसिद्ध है । श्रीमती एनी विसेंट में जो विशिष्ट शक्ति देखी जाती है. वह उनके माता-पिता में न थी और नहीं उनकी पुत्री में ही थी।
उक्त उदाहरणों पर ध्यान देने से यह स्पष्ट जान पड़ता है कि इस जन्म में देखी जाने वाली सब विलक्षणना न तो वर्तमान जन्म की कृति का परिणाम हैं, न माता-पिता के बल-संस्थार की और न केवल परिस्थिति की हो । इसलिए आत्मा के अस्तित्व की मर्यादा को गर्भ के प्रारम्भ समय से और भी पूर्व मानना चाहिए। वही पूर्वजन्म है। पूर्वजन्म में इच्छा या प्रवृत्ति द्वारा जो संस्कार संचित हुए हों उन्हीं के आधार पर उपर्युक्त शंकाओं तथा विसक्षणताओं का सुसंगत समाधान हो जाता है । जिस युक्ति से एक पूर्वजन्म सिद्ध हुआ, उसी के बल पर अनेक पूर्वजन्मों की परम्परा सिद्ध हो जाती है, क्योंकि अपरिमित जानशक्ति एक जन्म के अभ्यास का फल नहीं हो सकती । इस प्रकार आत्मा देह से भिन्न अनादि सिद्ध होती है 1 अनादि तत्त्व का कभी नाश नहीं होता, इस सिद्धान्त को सभी दार्शनिक मानते हैं । गीता में भी कहा गया है --
नासतो विद्यते भावो नाभावो विद्यते सतः । -गी०, अ० २, श्लोक १६
इतना ही नहीं, बलिक वर्तमान शरीर के बाद आत्मा का अस्तित्व माने बिना अनेक प्रश्न हल नहीं हो सकते । बहुत-से ऐसे लोग होते हैं कि जो इस जन्म में तो प्रामाणिक जीवन बिताते हैं, परन्तु रहते हैं दरिद्री और दूसरे ऐसे भी देखे जाते हैं जो न्याय, नीति और धर्म का नाम भी सुनकर चिढ़ते हैं, परन्तु होते हैं सब तरह से सुखी। ऐसे अनेक व्यक्ति मिल सकते हैं जो हैं तो स्वयं
