(१) जिस कर्म के उदय से जीव उत्तमकुल में जन्म लेता है, वह उच्चगोत्रकर्म है.
(२) जिस कर्म के उदय से जीव नीचकुल में जन्म लेता है, उसे नीचगोत्रकर्म कहते हैं।
धर्म और नीति की रक्षा के कारण जिस कुल ने चिरकाल से प्रसिद्धि प्राप्त की है, वह उच्चकुल है; जैसे-इक्ष्वाकुवंश, हरिवंश, चन्द्रवंश इत्यादि । अधर्म और अनीति करने से जिस कुल ने चिरकाल से अप्रसिद्धि व अकोति प्राप्त की हो, वह नीषकुल है; जैसे-मद्यविक्रेता कुल, वधक (कसाई) कुल और चौर कुल इत्यादि ।'
उच्चगोत्र के जाति, कुल, बल, रूप, तप, श्रुत, लाभ, और रूप की विशिष्टता से आठ भेद होते हैं और आठों की हीनता मे नीचगोत्र के भी आठ भेद समझने चाहिए; जैसे-जाति-हीनता, कुल-हीनता आदि ।
उक्त जाति आदि आठ विशषताओं का मद (अहंकार) न करने से उच्चगोत्र का और मद करने से नीनगोत्र का बन्ध होता है ।
गोत्रकर्म कुम्भकार के सदृश है। जैसे, कुम्हार (कुम्भकार) छोटेबड़े विविध प्रकार के घड़े अनता है। उनमें से कुछ घड़े कलश रूप होते हैं, जो अक्षत, चन्दन आदि से पूजा योग्य होते हैं। कुछ घडे मद्य आदि जैसे निन्दनीय पदार्थ रखे जाने से निन्दनीय होते हैं। इसी (ग) गोयं कम्मं तु दुविहं उच्च नीय च आहियं । उच्च अदाथिहं होड एवं दीयं पि अाहिय ।।
