अनिवृत्तिकरण गुणस्थान तक नौ गुणस्थान होते हैं । स्त्रीवेदी के अपर्याप्त अवस्था में मिध्यात्व और सासादन ये दो ही गुणस्थान होते हैं। नपुंसकवेदी के प्रपर्याप्त भवस्था में मिथ्यात्व सासादन व संत सम्यष्टि ये तीन गुणस्थान होते हैं । पुरुषवेदी के अपर्याप्त काल में पहला, दूसरा, चौथा और छठा ये चार गुणस्थान होते हैं ।"
शंका-नपुंमवेदी के अपर्याप्त अवस्था में असंत सम्यग्दृष्टि वाला चौथा गुणस्थान कैसे सम्भव है ? स्त्रीवेदी के अपर्याप्त अवस्था में चतुर्थ गुणस्थान क्यों नहीं होता ?
समाधान - जिसने पूर्व में नरकायु का बन्ध कर लिया है और बाद में केवली या श्रुतकेबली के पादमूल में क्षायिक सम्यक्त्व का प्रारम्भ कर दिया है ऐसे कृतकृत्य वेदक सम्यन्दष्टि या क्षायिक सम्यग्दृष्टि मरकर प्रथम नरक में उत्पन्न होते हैं। नरक में नियम से नपुंसकवेद होता है, इस प्रकार नपुंसकवेदी नारकी के अपर्याप्त अवस्था में चौथा गुणस्थान सम्भव है। सम्यग्दष्टि जीव मरकर स्त्रीवेदियों में उत्पन्न नहीं होता। इसलिए स्त्रीवेदी के अपर्याप्त अवस्था में चतुर्थगुणस्थान नहीं होता, कहा भी है।

सुट्टिमासु पुढवी जोइस-वण- भवण सब इत्थीसु ।
देसु समुप्पज्जइ सम्माइट्ठी दु जो जीवो ॥। १३३ ।। '
- सम्यष्टि जीव नीचे की छह नारक पृथिवियों में ज्योतिषी, व्यन्तर और भवनवासी देवों में और सर्वप्रकार की स्त्रियों में उत्पन नहीं होता है ।
जिन्होंने पहले आयु कर्म का बंध कर लिया है. ऐसे जीवों के सम्यग्दर्शन का उस गति सम्बन्धी श्रायु सामान्य के साथ विरोध न होते हुए भी उस उस गति सम्बन्धी विशेष में उत्पति के साथ विरोध पाया जाता है । भवनवासी, व्यन्तर, ज्योतिषी, प्रकीर्णक, श्रभियोग्य मोर किल्विधिक देवों में, नीचे के छह नरकों में, सब प्रकार की स्त्रियों में नपुंसकवेद में, विकलेन्द्रियों में एकेन्द्रियों में, लब्ध्यपर्याप्तक जीवों में और कर्मभूमिज तिर्यंचों में सम्यग्दृष्टि का उत्पत्ति के साथ विरोध है । इसलिए इतने स्थानों में सम्यग्दष्टि जीव उत्पन्न नहीं होता । नरक में नपुंसकवेद ही है, जिसने पूर्व में नरकायु बाँध ली है, पश्चात् सम्यग्दर्शन ग्रहण किया है, ऐसे जीव की नरक में उत्पत्ति को रोकने का सामर्थ्य सम्यग्दर्शन में नहीं है। इस प्रकार मात्र प्रथम नरक के नपुंसकों में असंयत सम्यग्दृष्टि उत्पन्न होता है ।
ऋषायमार्गग्गा में गुणस्थानों का कथन
थावर काय पडवी प्रष्यिट्टी - बि-ति चउत्थभागोत्ति ।
कोहतियं लोहो पुरण सुहमसुरागोति दिष्णेयो ||६८६ ॥
गाथार्थ - क्रोधका स्थावर से लेकर ग्रनिवृत्तिकरण के दूसरे भाग तक, मानकषाय स्थावर से लेकर अनिवृत्तिकरण के तीसरे भाग तक और मायाकषाय स्थावर से लेकर प्रनिवृत्तिकरण के चतुर्थ भाग तक तथा लोभकषाय स्थावर से लेकर सूक्ष्मराग तक जाननी चाहिए ॥ ६८६ ॥
