आदिपुराणम् ... तत्रातिबालविद्याऽद्या कुलावधिरनन्तरम् । वर्गोत्तमत्वपात्रत्वे तथा सृष्ट यधिकारिणा ॥१७५॥
व्यवहारेशिताऽन्या स्यादवध्यत्वमदण्ड्यता) मानार्हता प्रजासंबन्धान्तरं चेत्यनुक्रमात् ॥१७६॥ दशाधिकारिवस्तूनि स्युरुपासकसंग्रहे । तानीमानि यथोद्देशं संक्षेपेण विवृन्महे ॥१७७॥ बाल्यात्प्रभृति या विद्याशिक्षोद्योगाद् द्विजन्मनः। प्रोक्तातिबालविद्येति सा क्रिया द्विजसंमता ॥१७८॥ तस्यामसत्यां मूढात्मा हेयादेयानमिज्ञकः । मिथ्याश्रति प्रपद्येत 'द्विजन्मान्यैः प्रतारितः ॥१७॥ बाल्प एव ततोऽभ्यस्येद् द्विजन्मौपासिकों श्रुतिम् । स तया प्राप्तसंस्कारः स्वपरोत्तारको भवेत् ॥१८॥ कुलावधिः कुलाचाररक्षण स्यात् द्विजन्मनः । तस्मिन्नसत्यसौ नष्टक्रियोऽन्यकुलतां मजेत् ॥१८१॥ वर्णोत्तमत्वं वर्णेषु सर्वेष्वाधिक्यमस्य वै । तेनायं इलाध्यतामेति स्वपरोद्धारणक्षमः ॥१८२॥ वर्णोत्तमत्वं यद्यस्य न स्यान्न स्यात्प्रकृष्टता । अप्रकृष्टश्च नात्मानं शोधयेन परानपि ॥१८३॥ ततोऽयं शुद्धिकामः सन् सेवेतान्यं कुलिङ्गिनम् । कुब्रह्म वा ततस्तजान् दोषान् प्राप्नोत्यसंशयम् ॥१८॥ प्रदानाहत्वमस्येष्टं पात्रत्वं गुणगौरवात् । गुणाधिकोऽहि लोकेऽस्मिन् पूज्यः स्याल्लोकपूजितैः ॥१८५॥
ततो गुणकृतां स्वस्मिन् पात्रतां द्रढयेद्विजः । तदभावे विमान्यत्वाद् ह्रियतेऽस्य धनं नृपः ॥१६॥ अधिकार कहे हैं उन्हें यथाक्रमसे नामके अनुसार कहता हूँ ॥१७४॥ उन दश अधिकारों में पहला अतिबाल विद्या, दूसरा कुलावधि, तीसरा वर्णोत्तमत्व, चौथा पात्रत्व, पाँचवाँ सृष्ट्यधिकारिता, छठा व्यवहारेशिता, सातवां अवध्यत्व, आठवाँ अदण्डयता, नौवाँ मानार्हता और दशवाँ प्रजासम्बन्धान्तर है। उपासकसंग्रहमें अनुक्रमसे ये दश अधिकारवस्तुएं बतलायी गयी हैं। उन्हीं अधिकार वस्तुओंका उनके नामके अनुसार यहाँ संक्षेपसे कुछ विवरण करता हूँ। ॥१७५-१७७।। द्विजोंको जो बाल्य अवस्थासे ही लेकर विद्या सिखलानेका उद्योग किया जाता है उसे अतिबालविद्या कहते हैं, यह विद्या द्विजोंको अत्यन्त इष्ट है ॥१७८।। इस अतिबाल विद्याके अभावमें द्विज मूर्ख रह जाता है उसे हेय उपादेयका ज्ञान नहीं हो पाता और वह अपनेको झूठमूठ द्विज माननेवाले पुरुषोंके द्वारा ठगाया जाकर मिथ्या शास्त्रके अध्ययनमें लग जाता है ॥१७६।। इसलिए द्विजोंको उचित है कि वे बाल्य अवस्थामें ही श्रावकाचारके शास्त्रोंका अभ्यास करें क्योंकि उपासकाचारके शास्त्रोंके द्वारा जिसे अच्छे संस्कार प्राप्त हो जाते हैं वह निज और परको तारनेवाला हो जाता है ॥१८०॥ अपने कुलके आचारको रक्षा करना द्विजोंकी कुलावधि क्रिया कहलाती है। कुलके आचारकी रक्षा न होनेपर पुरुषकी समस्त क्रियाएँ नष्ट हो जाती हैं और वह अन्य कुलको प्राप्त हो जाता है ॥१८१॥ समस्त वर्गों में श्रेष्ठ होना ही इसकी वर्णोत्तम क्रिया है, इस वर्णोत्तम क्रियासे ही यह प्रशंसाको प्राप्त होता है और निज तथा परका उद्धार करने में समर्थ होता है ॥१८२॥ यदि इसके वर्णोत्तम क्रिया नहीं है अर्थात् इसका वर्ण उत्तम नहीं है तो इसके उत्कृष्टता नहीं हो सकती और जो उत्कृष्ट नहीं है वह न तो अपने-आपको शुद्ध कर सकता है और न दूसरेको ही शुद्ध कर सकता है ॥१८३।। जो स्वयं उत्कृष्ट नहीं है ऐसे द्विजको अपनी शुद्धिकी इच्छासे अन्य कुलिंगियों अथवा कुब्रह्मकी सेवा करनी पड़ती है और ऐसी दशामें वह निःसन्देह उन लोगोंमें उत्पन्न हुए दोषोंको प्राप्त होता है। भावार्थ-सदा ऐसे ही कार्य करना चाहिए जिससे वर्णकी उत्तमतामें बाधा न आवे ॥१८४।। गुणोंका गौरव होनेसे दान देनेके योग्य पात्रता भी इन्हीं द्विजोंमें होती है क्योंकि जो गणोंसे अधिक होता है वह संसारमें सब लोगोंके द्वारा पूजित होनेवाले लोगोंके द्वारा भी पूजा जाता है ॥१८५।। इसलिए द्विजोंको चाहिए कि वे अपने-आपमें गुणों१ यो विद्याशिक्षोद्योगो द्विजन्मनः द०,,ल०, अ०, स०, इ० । २ द्विजम्मन्यैः द०। ३ व्रजेत् द०, ल० । ४ कुत्सितब्रह्माणम् । ५ कुलिंगकुब्रह्मसेवनात् ।

180. Therefore, it is proper for the twice-born to study the scriptures of Shravaka-achara from childhood. By acquiring good conduct through these scriptures, he becomes capable of liberating himself and others.

181. Protecting the customs of one's family is called Kulavadhi for the twice-born. If one fails to protect the customs of his family, all his actions are destroyed, and he falls into another family.

182. Being superior to all other classes is the Varnottama action. Through this Varnottama action, he attains praise and becomes capable of liberating himself and others.

183. If one does not have this Varnottama action, that is, if his class is not superior, then he cannot be excellent. And one who is not excellent cannot purify himself or others.

184. Therefore, a twice-born who desires purity must serve other Kulangas or Kubrahmanas. By doing so, he undoubtedly acquires the faults that arise from them. Meaning: One should always act in a way that does not hinder the superiority of one's class.

185. Due to the importance of qualities, the right to receive donations also belongs to these twice-born. For one who is superior in qualities is worshipped by all in the world, even by those who are worshipped by the world.

186. Therefore, the twice-born should strengthen their right to receive donations through their qualities. If they lack these qualities, they will be deprived of wealth by the king due to their lack of respect.
