द्वाविंशं पर्व
५२७ ततो वनानां पर्यन्ते बभूव वनवेदिका । चनुमिर्गापुरस्तुरादूगगनाङ्गणा ॥२०॥ काचीयष्टिर्यनस्यव सा बभौ वनवेदिका । चामीकरमय रस्नैः खचिताङ्गी समन्ततः ॥२०६॥ सा बमौ केदिकोदप्रा सचर्या' समया वनम् । भम्यधीरिव संश्रित्य सचर्या समयावनम् ॥२०७॥ सुगुप्ताङ्गो सतीयासौ रुचिरा सूत्रपा वनम् । परीयाय श्रुतं जैनं सद्धीर्वा सूत्रपावनम् ॥२०॥ घण्टाजालानि लम्बानि मुक्तालम्बनकानि च । पुष्पसजश्च संरेजरमुष्यां गोपुरं प्रति ॥२०९॥ राजतानि वभुस्तस्या गोपुराण्यष्टमङ्गलैः । संगीतातोधनृत्तश्च रस्नामरणतोरणः ॥२१॥ ततः परमलं चक्रुर्विविधा धजपक्तयः । महीं वोथ्यन्तरालस्था हेमस्तम्भाप्रलम्बिताः ॥२११॥ सुस्थास्ते मणिपीठेषु ध्वजस्तम्माः स्फुरदुचः । विरेजुर्जगतां मान्याः सुराजान इवोन्नताः ॥२१२॥
अनुपम ही था ॥२०४॥ उन वनोंके अन्त में चारों ओर एक-एक वनवेदी थी जो कि ऊँचे-ऊँचे चार गोपुर-द्वारोंसे आकाशरूपी आँगनको रोक रही थी ॥२०५।। वह सुवर्णमयी वनवेदिका सब ओरसे रत्नोंसे जड़ी हुई थी जिससे ऐसी जान पड़ती थी मानो उस वनकी करधनी ही हो ।२०६।। अथवा वह वनवेदिका भव्य जीवोंकी बुद्धिके समान सुशोभित हो रही थी क्योंकि जिस प्रकार भव्य जीवोंकी बुद्धि उदग्र अर्थात् उत्कृष्ट होती है उसी प्रकार वह वनवेदिका भी उदग्र अर्थात् बहुत ऊँची थी, भव्य जीवोंकी बुद्धि जिस प्रकार सचर्या अर्थात् उत्तम चारित्रसे सहित होती है उसी प्रकार वह वनवेदिका भी सचर्या अर्थात् रक्षासे सहित थी और भव्य जीवोंकी बुद्धि जिस प्रकार समयावनं (समय+अवनं संश्रित्य) अर्थात् आगमरक्षाका आश्रय कर प्रवृत्त रहती है उसी प्रकार वह वनवेदिका भी समया वनं (वनं समया संश्रित्य ) अर्थात् वनके समीप भागका आश्रय कर प्रवृत्त हो रही थी ।।२०७॥ अथवा वह वनवेदिका सुगुप्तांगी अर्थात् सुरक्षित थी, सती अर्थात् समीचीन थी, रुचिरा अर्थात् देदीप्यमान थी, सूत्रपा अर्थात् सूत्र (डोरा) की रक्षा करनेवाली थी-सूतके नापमें बनी हुई थी-कहीं ऊँची-नीची नहीं थी,
और वनको चारों ओरसे घेरे हुए थी इसलिए किसी सत्पुरुषकी बुद्धिके समान जान पड़ती थी क्योंकि सत्पुरुषकी बुद्धि भी सुगुप्तांगी अर्थात् सुरक्षित होती है-पापाचारोंसे अपने शरीरको सुरक्षित रखती है, सती अर्थान् शंका आदि दोषोंसे रहित होती है, रुचिरा अर्थात् श्रद्धागुण प्रदान करनेवाली होती है, सूत्रपा अर्थात् आगमकी रक्षा करनेवाली होती है और सत्रपावनं अर्थात सत्रोंसे पवित्र जैनशास्त्रको घेरे रहती है-उन्हींके अनकल प्रवृत्ति करती है ।२०८।। उस वेदिकाके प्रत्येक गोपुर-द्वारमें घण्टाओंके समूह लटक रहे थे, मोतियोंकी झालर तथा फूलोंकी मालाएँ सुशोभित हो रही थीं ।।२०।। उस वेदिकाके चाँदीके बने हुए चारों गोपुर-द्वार अष्टमंगलद्रव्य, संगीत, बाजोंका बजना, नृत्य तथा रलमय आभरणोंसे युक्त तोरणोंसे बहुत ही सुशोभित हो रहे थे ।।२१०॥ उन वेदिकाओंसे आगे सुवर्णमय खम्भोंके अग्रभागपर लगी हुई अनेक प्रकारकी ध्वजाओंकी पंक्तियाँ महावीथीके मध्यकी भूमिको अलंकृत कर रही थीं ।।२१शा वे ध्वजाओंके खम्भे मणिमयी पीठिकाओंपर स्थिर थे, देदीप्यमान कान्तिसे युक्त थे, जगत्मान्य थे और अतिशय ऊँचे थे इसलिए किन्हीं उत्तम राजाओंके समान सुशोभित हो रहे थे क्योंकि उत्तम राजा भी मणिमय आसनोंपर स्थित होते हैं-बैठते
१. सवप्रा । २. वनस्य समीपम्। 'हाधिक्समया' इत्यादि सूत्रेण द्वितीया । सचर्या सचारित्रा। समयावनं सिवान्तरक्षणस् । 'समया शपथाचारकालसिद्धान्तसंविदः ।' इत्यभिधानात् । ३. सुरक्षिताङ्गी। ४. सूत्र रक्षन्ति । सूत्रपातस्य आपातत्वात्, निम्नोन्नतत्वादिदोषरहित इत्यर्थः, पक्षे सूत्रमागर्म पालयन्ति, आगमप्रतिपादितचारित्रं पालयन्तीत्यर्थः । ५. परिवने । ६. सूत्रेण पवित्रीकरणक्षमम् । ७. मौक्तिकदामानि । ८. रजतमयानि ।

527. Then there was a Vana-Vedika (forest-altar) extending to the limits of the forests, with four lofty Gopura-doors (tower-gates) reaching up to the sky-like courtyard. ||20||

206. That Vana-Vedika was made of gold, studded with jewels all around, as if it were the jewel-case of the forest. ||206||

Or, that Vana-Vedika was adorned like the intellect of the noble beings, for just as the intellect of the noble beings is Udgra (excellent), so also was that Vana-Vedika Udgra (very high); just as the intellect of the noble beings is Sacarya (possessing excellent character), so also was that Vana-Vedika Sacarya (protected); and just as the intellect of the noble beings is Samayavan (relying on the protection of the Agamas), so also was that Vana-Vedika Samayavan (relying on the protection of the forest). ||207||

208. Or, that Vana-Vedika was Sugupta-angi (well-protected), Sati (appropriate), Ruchira (radiant), Sutrapa (protecting the thread) - made according to the measure of the thread - not high or low anywhere, and surrounding the forest on all sides, so it seemed like the intellect of a virtuous man, for the intellect of a virtuous man is also Sugupta-angi (well-protected) - it protects its body from evil deeds, Sati (free from doubts and other defects), Ruchira (bestowing the virtue of faith), Sutrapa (protecting the Agamas), and Satrapavan (purified by the Satras) - it follows their teachings. ||208||

209. In each Gopura-door of that Vedika, there were hanging groups of bells, garlands of pearls, and wreaths of flowers, all beautifully adorned. ||209||

210. The four Gopura-doors of that Vedika, made of silver, were adorned with the eight auspicious substances, music, the sound of drums, dancing, and garlands of jewels. ||210||

211. Beyond those Vedikas, rows of various flags were attached to the front of golden pillars, adorning the ground in the middle of the Maha-Vithi (great street). ||211||

212. Those flag-poles were fixed on pedestals of jewels, radiant with brilliance, worthy of the world, and very high, so they were adorned like some excellent kings, for excellent kings also sit on jeweled seats. ||212||
