द्वितीयं पर्व
तमादिदेवं देवानामधिदेवं स्वयंभुवम् । प्रणम्य तत्पुराणस्य वयम्युपोद्घात'विस्तरम् ॥ १ ॥ अथातो धर्मजिज्ञासासमाहित मतिः कृती । श्रेणिकः परिपप्रच्छ गौतमं गणभृत्प्रभुम् ॥ २ ॥ भगवमर्थतः कृत्स्नं श्रुतं स्वायंभुवान्मुखात् । ग्रन्थतः श्रोतुमिच्छामि पुराणं स्वदनुग्रहात् ।। ३ ।। स्वमकारणबन्धुर्नस्स्वमकारणवत्सलः । त्वमकारणवेद्योऽसि दुःखातकार्तितात्मनाम् ॥ ४॥ पुण्याभिषेकममितः कुर्वन्तीव शिरस्सु नः । न्योमगङ्गाम्बुसच्छाया युष्मत्पादनखांशवः ॥ ५॥ तव दीप्ततपोलब्धे रालक्ष्मीः 'प्रतायिनी । अकालेऽप्यनुसंधत्ते सान्द्रवालातपश्रियम् ॥ ६॥ स्वया जगदिदं कृत्स्नम विद्यामीलितेक्षणम् । सयः प्रबोधमानीतं भास्वतेवाजिनीवनम् ॥ ७ ॥ यचेन्दुकिरणः स्पृष्टमनालीढं रवेः करैः । तस्वया हेलयो स्तमन्तर्वान्तं वचोंऽशुमिः ॥८॥ तवोच्छिखाः स्फुरन्यता योगिन् सप्त महर्द्धयः । कर्मेन्धनदहोहीताः "सप्तार्चिष इवार्चिषः ॥ ९ ॥

अब मैं देवाधिदेव स्वयम्भू भगवान् वृषभदेवको नमस्कार कर उनके इस महापुराणसम्बन्धी उपोद्घात-प्रारम्भका विस्तारके साथ कथन करता हूँ॥।॥ अथानन्तर.धर्मका स्वरूप जानने में जिसकी बुद्धि लग रही है, ऐसे बुद्धिमान श्रेणिक महाराजने गणनायक गौतम स्वामीसे पूछा ।।२।। हे भगवन , श्रीवर्द्धमान स्वामीके मुखसे यह सम्पूर्ण पुराण अर्थरूपसे मैंने सुना है अब आपके अनुग्रहसे उसे ग्रन्थरूपसे सुनना चाहता हूँ॥३॥ हे स्वामिन् , आप हमारे अकारण बन्धु हैं, हमपर बिना कारणके ही प्रेम करनेवाले हैं तथा जन्म-मरण आदि दुखदायी रोगोंसे पीड़ित संसारी प्राणियोंके लिए अकारण-स्वार्थरहित वैद्य हैं ॥४।। हे देव, आकाशगङ्गाके जलके समान स्वच्छ, आपके चरणोंके नखोंकी किरणें जो हमारे शिरपर पड़ रही हैं वे ऐसी मालूम होती हैं. मानों मेरा सब ओरसे अभिषेक ही कर रही हों ।।५।। हे स्वामिन् , उग्र तपस्याकी लब्धिसे सब ओर फैलनेवाली आपके शरीरकी आभा असमयमें ही प्रातःकालीन सूर्यकी सान्द्र-सघन शोभाको धारण कर रही है ॥६॥ हे भगवन् , जिस प्रकार सूर्य रातमें निमीलित हुए कमलोंको शीघ्र ही प्रबोधित-विकसित कर देता है उसी प्रकार आपने अज्ञान रूपी निद्रामें निमीलित-सोये हुए. इस समस्त जगत्को प्रबोधित-जागृत कर दिया है ॥७॥ हे देव, हृदयके जिस अज्ञानरूपी अन्धकारको चन्द्रमा अपनी किरणोंसे छू नहीं सकता तथा सूर्य भी अपनी रश्मियोंसे जिसका स्पर्श नहीं कर सकता उसे आप अपने वचनरूपी किरणोंसे अनायास ही नष्ट कर देते हैं ॥८॥ हे योगिन्, उत्तरोत्तर बढ़ती हुई आपकी यह बुद्धि आदि सात ऋद्धियाँ ऐसी मालूम होती हैं मानो कर्मरूपी इंधनके जलानेसे उद्दीप्त हुई

## Second Chapter

Saluting the Self-Existent Lord, the Supreme Lord of the Gods, the Lord Tama, we begin the detailed introduction of this Purana. ||1||

Now, the wise Shrenik, whose mind is focused on the knowledge of Dharma, asked the Lord of the Ganadharas, Gautam Swami. ||2||

O Lord, I have heard this entire Purana from the mouth of the Self-Existent Lord, in its essence. Now, by your grace, I wish to hear it from the scriptures. ||3||

O Lord, you are our uncaused friend, you love us without any reason, and you are the uncaused physician for those who are tormented by the suffering of birth and death. ||4||

O Lord, the rays of your nails, falling on our heads, are like the pure water of the celestial Ganga, as if they are performing an endless abhisheka (consecration) upon us. ||5||

O Lord, the radiance of your body, obtained through intense penance, is all-pervading and shines even at an untimely hour, like the dense, brilliant light of the morning sun. ||6||

O Lord, just as the sun quickly awakens and opens the lotuses that were closed in the night, you have awakened and roused this entire world, which was asleep in the slumber of ignorance. ||7||

O Lord, the darkness of ignorance in the heart, which the moon cannot touch with its rays, and which the sun cannot touch with its rays, is effortlessly destroyed by you with the rays of your words. ||8||

O Lord, your seven great wisdoms, which are constantly increasing, are like the seven flames of fire, ignited by the burning of the fuel of karma. ||9||
