प्रथमं पर्व
कवीनां कृतिनिर्वाहे सतो मत्वावलम्बनम् । कविताम्भोधिमुद्वेलं' लिलवयिषुरस्म्यहम् ॥१३॥ कवेर्भावोऽथवा कर्म काव्यं तज्ज्ञैर्निरुच्यते । तत्प्रतीतार्थमग्राम्यं सालंकारमनाकुलम् ॥९४॥ . केचिदर्थस्य सौन्दर्यमपरे पदसौष्ठवम् । वाचामलं क्रियां प्राहुस्तद्वयं नो मतं मतम् ॥१५॥ सालंकारमुपारूढरसमुद्भूतसौष्ठवम् । अनुच्छिष्टं सतां काव्यं सरस्वत्या मुखायते ॥१६॥ अस्पृष्टबन्धलालित्यमपेतं रसवत्तया । न तत्काव्यमिति ग्राम्य केवलं कटु कर्णयोः ॥९७॥ सुश्लिष्टपदविन्यासं प्रबन्धं रचयन्ति ये । श्राव्यबन्धं प्रसन्नार्थ ते महाकवयो मताः ॥९॥ महापुराणसंबन्धि महानायकगोचरम् । त्रिवर्गफलसंदर्म महाकाव्यं तदिष्यते ॥१९॥ निस्तनन् ” कतिचिच्छ्लोकान् सर्वोऽपि कुरुते कविः । पूर्वापरार्थघटनैः प्रबन्धो दुष्करो मतः ॥१०॥ शब्दराशिरपर्यन्तः स्वाधीनोऽर्थः स्फुटा' रसाः। सलमाश्च प्रतिच्छन्दाः"कवित्वे का दरिद्रता ॥१०१॥
करना चाहिए और न दुर्जनोंका अनादर ही करना चाहिए ॥९१-९२॥ कवियोंके अपने कर्तव्यकी पूर्तिमें सज्जन पुरुष ही अवलम्बन होते हैं ऐसा मानकर मैं अलंकार, गुण, रीति आदि लहरोंसे भरे हुए कवितारूपी समुद्रको लाँघना चाहता हूँ अर्थात् सत्पुरुषोंके आश्रयसे ही मैं इस महान् काव्य ग्रन्थको पूर्ण करना चाहता हूँ ॥१३॥ काव्यस्वरूपके जाननेवाले विद्वान्, कविके भाव अथवा कार्यको काव्य कहते हैं। कविका वह काव्य सर्वसंमत अर्थसे सहित, ग्राम्यदोषसे रहित, अलंकारसे युक्त और प्रसाद आदि गुणोंसे शोभित होना चाहिए ।।१४।। कितने ही विद्वान् अर्थकी सुन्दरताको वाणीका अलंकार कहते हैं और कितने ही पदोंको सुन्दरताको, किन्तु हमारा मत है कि अर्थ और पद दोनोंकी सुन्दरता ही वाणीका अलंकार है ॥९५।। सज्जन पुरुषोंका बनाया हुआ जो काव्य अलंकारसहित, शृंगारादि रसोंसे युक्त, सौन्दर्यसे ओतप्रोत और उच्छिष्टतारहित अर्थात् मौलिक होता है वह काव्य सरस्वतीदेवीके मुखके समान शोभायमान होता है अर्थात् जिस प्रकार शरीरमें मुख सबसे प्रधान अंग है उसके बिना शरीरकी शोभा और स्थिरता नहीं होती उसी प्रकार सर्वलक्षणपूर्ण काव्य ही सब शास्त्रों में प्रधान है तथा उसके बिना अन्य शास्त्रोंको शोभा और स्थिरता नहीं हो पाती ।।९६ ।। जिस काव्यमें न तो रीतिकी रमणीयता है, न पदोंका लालित्य है और न रसका ही प्रवाह है उसे काव्य नहीं कहना चाहिए वह तो केवल कानोंको दुःख देनेवाली ग्रामीण भाषा ही है ॥९७। जो अनेक अर्थोंको सूचित करनेवाले पदविन्याससे सहित, मनोहर रीतियोंसे युक्त एवं स्पष्ट अर्थसे उद्भासित प्रबन्धों-काव्योंकी रचना करते हैं वे महाकवि कहलाते हैं ॥२८॥ जो प्राचीनकालके इतिहाससे सम्बन्ध रखनेवाला हो, जिसमें तीर्थकर चक्रवर्ती आदि महापुरुषोंके चरित्रका चित्रण किया गया हो तथा जो धर्म, अर्थ और कामके फलको दिखाने वाला हो उसे महाकाव्य कहते हैं ।।९९॥ किसी एक प्रकीर्णक विषयको लेकर कुछ श्लोकोंकी रचना तो सभी कवि कर सकते हैं परन्तु पूर्वापरका सम्बन्ध मिलाते हुए किसी प्रबन्धकी रचना करना कठिन कार्य है ॥१००। जब कि इस संसारमें शब्दोंका समूह अनन्त है, वर्णनीय विषय अपनी इच्छाके आधीन है, रस स्पष्ट हैं और उत्तमोत्तम छन्द सुलभ हैं तब कविता करनेमें दरिद्रता क्या है ? अर्थात् इच्छानुसार सामग्रीके मिलनेपर उत्तम कविता ही करना

Those who create compositions with well-connected words, adorned with pleasing styles, and clear meaning, are considered great poets. ||28||

A great epic is considered to be that which is related to ancient history, depicts the characters of Tirthankaras, Chakravartis, and other great men, and shows the fruits of Dharma, Artha, and Kama. ||19||

Every poet can compose a few verses on a scattered topic, but it is difficult to create a composition by connecting the beginning and the end. ||100||

When the collection of words is infinite in this world, the subject to be described is under one's control, the emotions are clear, and the best meters are readily available, then what is the poverty in poetry? ||101||

One should not disrespect the wicked, nor should one disrespect the virtuous. ||91-92||
