સ્થા. જેનું ધર્મકર્તવ્યપ્ર. ૭ તથા ફૂલેથી તેને સજીને તેના પ્રત્યે આદરમાન પ્રગટ કરવામાં આવતા.
(૩) The most general name for sanctuary is Chai
tya. (પ્રા. ચેતિય) a term not only applying to building but to sacred Trees, Memorial stone, Holy stupas, Images, religious inscriptions, Hence all edifices having the character of a sacred monument or Chaityas–એ. કર્ન લિખિત Manual of Buddhism (પૃષ્ટ ૮૧).
અર્થ–પૂજા સ્થાન માટે સૌથી પ્રચલિત શબ્દ ચૈત્ય (પ્રા. ચેતિયો હતો. ફકત કાઈ ભવનને જ તે શબ્દ લગાડવામાં આવતે નહે; પણ પવિત્ર વૃક્ષ, સ્મારક શિલા, સ્તૂપ, મૂર્તિઓ તથા ધર્મલેખનને પણ લગાડવામાં આવતું. તેથી કહેવું જોઈએ
કે સઘળાં સ્થાન જ્યાં પવિત્ર સ્મારક હોય તે ચૈત્ય છે. (૪) In a secondary sense to a temple or shrine
containing a Chaitya or Dhatugarbh. Chaityas or Dagobas or an essential feature of temples or chapels constructed for purpose of worship, there being a passage round the Chaitya for circumbulation ( Helduel ) and for this such temples have received their appellation the name of Chaityas, flowers, applied not only to sanctuaries but to sacred trees, holy spot and other religious monuments.-24.
