संक्षिप्त जैन इतिहास । अतः मैनधर्म में वह नियम आजीविकोंके पहलेसे ही स्वीकृत थे। आजीविकोले भगवान महावीरने भी उन्हींका प्रतिपादन किया अपने सिद्धान्त था । आधुनिक विद्वानोंको भी यह मान्य है'
लिये थे। कि आजीविक नेता मक्खलिगोशाल, पूरणकस्सप आदिपर जैनधर्मका विशेष प्रभाव पड़ा था और उनने जैनधमसे बहुत कुछ सीखा था । आजीविक सम्प्रदायका निकास ही जैन धर्मसे हुआ हो तो कोई आश्चर्य नहीं। जैनधर्मके आधारसे आजी
१-स्व. जेम्स डी० एल्विस सा० लिखते हैं कि 'दिगम्बर' एक प्राचीन संप्रदाय समझा जाता था और उपरोक्त साधुओंके सिद्धांतोपर जैनधर्मका प्रभाव पड़ा था । (" In James d • Alwis' paper (Ind. Anti. VIII ) on the six Tirthakas the “ Digamberas" appear to have been regarded as an old order of ascetics and all of these heretical teachers betray the influence of Jainism in their doctrines. "-Ind, Antri. Vol. IX. P. 161). डॉ हमन बैकोबी भी यही बात प्रकट करते हैं, यथाः " The preceding four Tirthakar appear all to have adopted some or other doctrines or practices of the Jaina system, probably from the Jains themselves...... It appears from the preceding remarks that .Jain ideas & practices must bave been corrent at the time of Mahavira and independently of bim. This combined with other arguments, leads as to the opinion that the Nirgranthas (Jainas ) were really in existence long before Mahavira, who was the roformer of the already existing sect. "-Ind.
