The opinion that the Buddhist monastic order has taken the Brahman ascetic for its model, has been distinctly supported by scholars like Max Muller, Kern, and Bühler. Max Mul er after showing that the very word Bhikkhu or Bhiksu, applied to the members of the Buddhist fraternity is derived from Bhikshâkâryâ, the technical term for the begging of a Brahman ascetic; and after saying that many of the technical terms of the Buddhists could have come from the same source only, observes that it has been rightly said "without Brahmanism no Buddhism." We have already referred to some points of similarity between the Brahmanic, Jain and Buddhist monastic orders, we shall now look into some more rules regarding the lives of the ascetics of these three orders.
