Upto now we have considered only some minor points of similarity between the two sects, now we will touch upon an important one, namely the great similarity that exists between the vows of the Jain and Buddhist ascetics. The five important precepts for the Birddhists are the following. (Quoted by Jacobi in his introduction to the Jain Suttas Part I.) 1. 1 take the vow not to destroy life. 2. I take the vow not to steal. 3 I take the vow to abstain from impi. rity. 4. I take the vow not to lie. 5. I take the vow to abstain from intoxicating drinks, which hinder progress and virtue.
