tions. Mr. Mansukhram was quite familiar with the subject. Still, I do believe, I have worried him a good deal. Taking advantage of our relations as pupil and teacher, I besieged this most patient friend night and day, busy or at leisure, just as it suited me. I must have troubled Mr. Mansukhram at least sixty four times in reading four lectures with him. With these facts before me, I must say that most of the merits of the work are to be attributed to Mr. Mansukhram; the faults are all mine. I have to thank my friends Messrs. Manilal Nabhulal Dwivedi and Kashinath Trimbak Telang for a few suggestions, corrections, &c. My respectful thanks are also due to the author for his kindness in having supplied me with a list of technical terms.
On opening the volume I find many faults reproaching me. In excuse I may urge that the foundation of the work was laid by four hands, and that in the work of superstruction were required not four nor eight, but I might say sixteen hands. To this cause again may be assigned want of uniformity here and there. There are some blemishes due to my anxiety to make the language accessible to Parsee readers, also to the imperfect state of the art of printing. Besides this the language may sound harsh or unintelligible in a few places in spite of all our efforts to make it natural and intelligible at a glance. But it would be well if the critic considered the nature of his materials before blaming the workman for his faults. The worst fault to me is that the language should anywhere read non-Gujarati. I have taken all care to avoid this blemish: if any still remains, the critic will see that it was inevitable. Possibly a scholar might have produced better execution. But I found none willing to undertake the first trial. Even if I had found someone, I doubt if he would have given the work the enthusiastic and persevering attention which we have bestowed upon it. To us it was a labour of love-no hireling could take it so.
