________________ Verses 40, 41 has to renounce all his grandeur to attain the eternal bliss of liberation. Why not you renounce beforehand the worldly sense-objects? You would thus save yourself from ridicule, as the wanderer saint who had picked up, with the intention of washing it and not to eat, the piece of sweet-food which had fallen in filth. EXPLANATORY NOTE ācārya Pūjyapāda's Istopadeśa: त्यागाय श्रेयसे वित्तमवित्तः संचिनोति यः । स्वशरीरं स पङ्केन स्नास्यामीति विलिम्पति ॥ १६॥ जो निर्धन मनुष्य पुण्यप्राप्ति होगी इसलिये दान करने के लिये धन को एकत्रित करता है वह ‘मैं स्नान कर लूँगा' इस विचार से अपने शरीर को कीचड़ से पेटता है। The poor man who accumulates wealth so as to be able to spend it in future on virtuous activities, like giving of gifts, is like the man who deliberately soils his body with mud thinking that he will clean it later on by bathing. सर्व धर्ममयं क्वचित्क्वचिदपि प्रायेण पापात्मकं क्वाप्येतद्द्वयवत्करोति चरितं प्रज्ञाधनानामपि । तस्मादेष तदन्धरज्जुवलनं स्नानं गजस्याथवा मत्तोन्मत्तविचेष्टितं न हि हितो गेहाश्रमः सर्वथा ॥४१॥ अर्थ - गृहस्थाश्रम विद्वज्जनों के भी चारित्र को प्रायः किसी सामायिक आदि शुभ कार्य में पूर्णतया धर्मरूप, किसी विषयभोगादिरूप कार्य में 37
