आत्मानुशासन
Further, the following exertions of the supreme souls are the outcome of great, not minor, austerities: extraordinary detachment from the sense-pleasures; unceasing study of the Scripture; supreme compassion; sharp intellect that has the power to dispel the darkness of delusion caused by absolutism; and, finally, giving up the body by relinquishing food as per the prescribed method, at the end of life.
उपायकोटिदूरक्षे स्वतस्ततः इतोऽन्यतः । सर्वतः पतनप्राये काये कोऽयं तवाग्रहः ॥६९॥
अर्थ - करोड़ों उपायों को करके भी जिस शरीर का रक्षण न स्वयं किया जा सकता है और न अन्य किसी के द्वारा कराया जा सकता है, किन्तु जो सब प्रकार से नष्ट ही होने वाला है, उस शरीर की रक्षा के विषय में तेरा कौन- - सा आग्रह है ? अर्थात् जब किसी भी प्रकार से उक्त शरीर की रक्षा नहीं की जा सकती है तब हठपूर्वक सब प्रकार से उसकी रक्षा का प्रयत्न करना निरर्थक है।
Why your insistence on protecting the body that cannot be defended even after employing tens of millions of measures, by self or by others, and whose annihilation is certain? In other words, by no means can the body be protected from destruction; your insistence on protecting it is futile.
