But it is not found either in the Saptapadarthi or Hetukhandana of Śiváditya. As the verse treats of Mahavidya Syllogisms, it must have been taken by Vádîudra from some work of Śivaditya on Mahavidyá Syllogisms. śivâditya has been alluded to by Gangeshopádhyáya (A. D. 1178?) in his Tattva-chintamani1 and by Jánakînátha (A. D. 1400?) in his Nyayamanjari without mentioning the name of his work.
Mahámahopadhyaya Gokulanátha3 (A. D. 1588) of Mangroni in Maithila country quotes a verse from Śiváditya Miśra's work in the following passage of his Pada-vákya-ratná kara to explain the difference between Viśeshana and Upalakshana:
विशेषे साक्षात्संसृष्टं विशेषणं, परंपरयोपलक्षणम् । यथाह शिवादित्यः"व्यावर्तनीयमधितिष्ठति यद्धि साक्षा
देतद्विशेषणमतो विपरीतमन्यत् ।
दण्डी पुमानिति विशेषणमत्र दण्डः
पुंसो न जातिरनुदण्डमसौ च तस्य ॥ "
पदवाक्यरत्नाकरः पृ. ५१ ( Shastra M. Edition 1904) This verse is not seen in any of the known works of Śiváditya Miśra. We must therefore infer that he must have written many works on logic. Let us hope that some of them may be discovered in future.
Short-notices of authors who have mentioned Mahavidyá, Vádîndra and his Mahavidyá-Vidambana
1 चित्सुखाचार्य- -It has already been mentioned that Chitsukháchárya has alluded to the Mahavidyá syllogisms. He was a grent Vedántin and lived about A. D. 1200. His published works are (1) Tattvapradipika (Chitsukhi) (2) A commentary on Ánandabodháchárya's Nyáyamakaranda. He has also written (3) a commentary on Sriharsha's Khandana which is not published. His other works recently discovered and secured by Mr. S.
