were situated respectively in Amalakshuddunga within the Phänita vithi (subdivision), in Shattapāņāyichatra incorporating Panchakandaka within the Pundarikā mandala (smaller district or its part), and in the Panchanagari vishaya (district). Of these, the Pañchanagari vishaya no doubt had its headquarters at the city of the same name whence the Baigram plate was issued. We have elsewhere suggested that this city is possibly the same as Ptolemey's Pentapolis and is no other than modern Pañohbibi in the Bogra District. The bhukti (province) of Pundravardhana, identified with modern Mahästhan in the Bogra District, originally comprised northern Bengal, although in later times its jurisdiction is known sometimes to have extended over certain parts of south-eastern and southern Bengal. The village of Poshali, whence the family of the engraver hailed, seems to be the same as the Pôshall galli of the Radhiya Brāhmaṇas of Bengal. The village has been identified with modern Poshēlā about 5 miles to the south-east of Mangalkot in the Burdwan District of West Bengal, although little can be said in favour of the identification.
