उपसर्गाध्ययनं जाऊँ । न जाने स्त्री परीषह से मेरा संयम नष्ट हो जाए अथवा स्नान आदि के लिए जल सेवन की अभिलाषा से मैं साधुत्व से पतित हो जाऊं । वे अविवेकीजन ऐसी परिकल्पना करते हुए सोचते हैं कि हमारे पास पहले से अर्जित कोई धन नहीं है, जो संयम से गिर जाने पर हमारे निर्वाह में हमें सहारा दे । अत: किन्हीं के पूछने पर हम हस्ति शिक्षा, धनुर्वेद आदि विद्याएँ तथा कुटिल विण्टल-टेड़े-मेढे कठिन प्रश्नों को समाहित करने के विधिक्रम उन्हें बतलायेंगे, कहेंगे, प्रयोग करेंगे । ऐसा निश्चयकर वे हीनसत्त्व-आत्मबलविहीन पुरुष व्याकरण आदि विषयों के अध्ययन में प्रयत्नशील होते हैं, परिश्रम करते हैं, किन्तु उन मंद भाग्यों-अभागों के अभिप्सित प्रयोजन की इससे पूर्ति नहीं होती । कहा है-विद्या रूपी बीज, जो उपशम-शांतिरूपी फल उत्पन्न करता है, उससे जो मनुष्य धन रूपी फल चाहता है, उसका परिश्रम आदि विफल हो, व्यर्थ सिद्ध हो तो इसमें कौनसा आश्चर्य है । पदार्थों का, कार्यों का फल नियत-निश्चित होता है, इसलिए जिस पदार्थ का जो फल है, उससे भिन्न फल वह अपने कर्ता को नहीं दे सकता । चावल के बीज से जौ का पौधा कभी पैदा नहीं हो सकता। अब सूत्रकार उपसंहार करते हुए कहते हैं ।
इच्चेव पडिलेहंति, वलया पडिलेहिणो । वितिगिच्छसमावन्ना, पंथाणं च अकोविया ॥५॥ छाया - इत्येवं प्रतिलेखंति, वलय प्रतिलेखिनः ।
विचिकित्सासमापन्नाः पथश्चाकोविदाः ॥ अनुवाद - जिस प्रकार युद्ध का अवसर आने पर डरपोक व्यक्ति छिपने के स्थान को खोज लेने का विचार करते हैं उसी प्रकार संशय युक्त अकोविद-ज्ञान शून्य पुरुष सोचते हैं कि संयम से भ्रष्ट हो जाने पर लौकिक विद्याएँ हमें त्राण देंगी-उन द्वारा हम अपनी रक्षा कर पायेंगे, जीवन निर्वाह कर लेंगे ।
टीका - 'इत्येवमि' ति' पूर्वप्रक्रान्परामर्शार्थः, यथा भीरवः सङ्ग्रामे प्रविविक्षवो वलयादिकं प्रति उपेक्षिणो भवन्तीति, एवं प्रव्रजिता मन्दभाग्यतया अल्पसत्वा आजीविकाभयाद्व्याकरणादिकं जीवनोपायत्वेन 'प्रत्युपेक्षन्ते । परिकल्पयन्ति, किम्भूताः ? विचिकित्सा-चित्तविप्लुतिः-किमेनं संयम भारमुत्क्षिप्तमन्तं नेतुं वयं समर्थाः उत नेतीव्येवम्भूता, तथा चोक्तम् -
"लुक्खमणुण्हमणिययं कालाइक्कंतभोयणं विरसं । भूमीसयणं लोओ असिणाणं बंभचेरं च ॥१॥" छाया - रुक्षमनुष्ठामनियतं कालातिक्रान्तं भोजनं विरसम् । भूमिशयनं लोचोऽस्नानं ब्रह्मचर्यं च ॥१॥
तां समापन्नाः- समागताः, यथा पन्थानं प्रति ‘अकोविदा' अनिपुणाः, किमयं पन्था विवक्षितं भू भागं यास्यत्युत नेतीत्येवं कृतचित्तविप्लुतयो भवन्ति, तथा तेऽपि संयमभारवहनं प्रति विचिकित्सां समापन्ना निमित्तगणितादिकं जीविका) प्रत्युपेक्षन्त इति ॥५॥ साम्प्रतं महापुरुषचेष्टिते दृष्टान्तमाह -
टीकार्थ - इच्चेव-इत्येवम् यह पद पूर्वप्रक्रान्त-पहले कही गई बात के संसूचन हेतु है । जैसे डरपोक आदमी, जो युद्ध में हिस्सा लेना चाहते हैं समरांगण में संकट उपस्थित होने पर अपने छिपने के लिए गड्ढा आदि गुप्त स्थानों की खोज करते हैं, टोह करते हैं । इसी तरह कई आत्म पराक्रम विहीन प्रव्रजित-दीक्षित साधु अपने मन्द भाग्य-बदकिस्मत के कारण आजीविका के भय से जीवन निर्वाह की दृष्टि से व्याकरण आदि
