a kind of tree. 13.19-21. [Acc. to G. T. this may perhaps be the same as the tree known as figer (Solanum nigrum) in Gujarāti. Hemacandra mentions 'जाली' at two places in his निघण्टुशेष : ( 1 ) राणे तु किङ्किणी जाली - 21584 and (2) जाली घोषा सुतिक्तका - 22065. Sri Bāpālāla G. Vaidya, Principal, Occhavalāla Nazara Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya, Surat, writes in his letter dated 10—12—'58 that this may probably be जालिनी, the plant of 'Luffa acutangula'. He is of opinion that the occurrence of जालि here in place of जालिनी may be the result of poetic licence of Skt. authors to use the terms like वृक्ष, लता, गुल्म etc. in a loose synonymous way. The reference here is to the founding of the city of Anahillapura Pațaņa (modern Pāṭaņa in north Gujarata). There is a temple of Siva, known as जाळेश्वर महादेव, on the northern bank of the river Saravati, on the site of old Pațana. Even now a big annual fair takes place there. It is possible that the name might have been derived from some जालितरु, or perhaps the same जालितरु] cf. Guj जाळु, जाळियुं, in the sense of a tree.
