INTRODUCTION
ACARYA Shri Hemacandra Suri's Dvyāśrayakavya written with an object to illustrate the author's Siddhahaimaśabdānuśāsana is not only a poem consisting of extra-ordinary grammatical illustrations but is also an important historical document of the history of Caulukyas of Gujarat. The blend of grammar, history and poetry is clearly visible in this poem. Its nomenclature the 'Dvyāśraya' based on 'two', perhaps, indicates to its object of illustrating grammar and reproducing the annals of his conte mporary king Siddaraja and Kumārapāla together with their predecessors beginning with Mūlarāja. The independent title 'Kumārapālacarita' was also written in Prakrit to illustrate the Prakrit grammar of the author which he thinks to be indifferentiable part of Sanskrit.
Hemacandra was born in a Śreṣṭhin family in 1088 A. D. at Dhandhūka. His parents Caciga and his mother Cahiņī or Pāhiņī were devoted to Jain faith. Their teacher Devacandrasūri predicated the greatness of the child Cangadeva who was initiated to Jain faith at the age of five and ultimately attained the Sūri designation at the age of twenty one years only. Due to his golden colour and clear vision, he was named as Hemacandra.
