The Oriental Institute in Baroda was the second important Indological centre in India founded in 1893 by Maharaja of Baroda. The major objective of the institute was to develop a well equipped library of rare and unpublished Manuscript and reference books on Oriental and Indological studies.
The bibliography of Colette Caillat is quite impressive: nine personal books, mostly on Jaina texts, direction of eight books, around 90 articles and 190 reviews in various journals.
Caillat was born in Saint-Leu-la-Foret, Seine-et-Oise, January 15, 1921. She embarked upon her academic career with the study of Classical Latin and Greek, focusing on their literary and grammatical aspects. This led her to the study of Sanskrit under Louis Renou and Jules Bloch when he replaced Prof. Renou who was visiting India. Prof. Bloch played a key role in exposing his students to Indian classical languages such as Pali, Prakrit and Apabhramsha as well as modern Indo-Aryan languages. Encouraged by the strong presence of Indian students in his class, Bloch taught his students various details of Indian life. Since no one in France was proficient in these texts, Renou introduced her to Walther Schubring (1881-1969) who led her firmly to the path of Jain studies and encouraged her to participate in the Critical Pali Dictionary, to which she contributed regularly. In India, which she visited for the first time in 1963, she established close contacts with Prof. A.N. Upadhye (1906-1975), Pandit D.D. Malvania (1910-2000), Prof. H.C. Bhayani (1917-2000), Pandit Sukhlalji (1880-1978), Muni Punyavijaya (1895-1971) and Acarya Vidyánandji Maharaj. She often worked in Mysore and in Ahmedabad, at the L.D. Institute of Indology, a place she continued to visit regularly over the years, attracted by its scholarly and family atmosphere.
If we were to describe Colette Caillat's scholarly activity in brief, we could say that she was, a specialist in the languages, literatures and cultures of Jainism and Buddhism
