If the enjoyment of carnal sensual pleasures had any merit in them why would the great and noble souls like the prophets (Tīrthankaras), kings emperors (Cakravartins) and Baldevas (another category of righteous and noble souls included amongst the sixty-three commendable personalities - Trisasti-śalaka-puruṣa) discard them as any one would discard worthless rotten grass. This clearly means that the carnal pleasures not only have no merit in them but they are positively harmful in the ultimate analysis, and ought to be given up.
