PREFACE
69 The Aupapātika-sutra has been prescribed by the University of Bombay as a text-book for students taking Ardha-māgadbi as their second language for the Intermediate Arts Examiantion ; and therefore, an editiun of the sa ne is a requirment that has to be fulfilled by those who would wish to encourage the study of this language. No doubt, Dr. Leumann had published its edition before ; but being in Roman characters, it offers difficulities to the students in India, as they are accustomed to read such works in the Devanāgarl characters. Āgamodaya Samiti also had published this Sutra with a Sanskrit Commentary, in a Pothi form which does not prove very convenient to the College-going students; and then again these copies very probably are not now available. For these reasons it was deemed necessary to publish this Sutra ; and I am glad to say, with what assistance I could get from my friend Mr. Motilal Ladhaji of Poona, I was successful in getting it out through the press. My warmest thanks are due to him for this help.
In preparing this edition, I could get the help of & Ms. from the Bhandarkar Oriental Institute, in addition to what I could draw from the two editions, mentioned above. In my footnotes, the following letters have been used to represent these.
A. stands for the Agamodaya Samiti Edition. B stands for the Ms of the B. O. R. !. No. 72 of 1880-81. L stands for the edition of Dr. Leumann, published in the
year 1883 In conclusion, I have to thank my friend Mr. G. K. Gokhale the Manager of the Ganesh Printing Press, for the various suggestions and for the promptness with which he carried the book through the press.
