PREFACE
Vyomavati, one of the earliest known commentaries on Prasastapāda's Padārthadharmasamgraha, a work which is usually called a Bhāșya on the Vaiseșika-sūtias of Kanāda but which may be fairly viewed as an original contribution to the Vaišeșika system of Indian philosophy, was edited for the first time by Mahāmahopädhyāya Gopinath Kaviraj and Pandit Dhundhiraj Šāstrin and published in the Chowkhamba Sanskrit Series in 1930.
It is a pity that the name and identity as well as the age of the author are yet to be determined. It goes without saying that this commentary excels all other commentaries on Prasastapāda's work by reason of its clarity of exposition. It is interesting to note that the commentator refers to a number of Vaiseşika-sūtras that cannot be traced in the extant texts commented upon by Candrānanda, Vädindra, Sankara Miśra and others. There are a few cases whec he introduces the views of others which are unmistakably running commentaries on the Bhāșya, a fact that suggessts that there have been some more commentators before him whose names and complete works are lost to posterity.
