भौतिक सिद्धांत का प्रवर्तक, वेद का प्रत्याख्याता, केवल प्रत्यक्ष प्रमाण को मानने वाला, देह को ही आत्मा मानने वाला, देह के विनाश में ही निर्वाण देखने वाला तत्त्ववेत्ता एवं उसका शास्त्र, दुर्योधन का मित्र एक राक्षस जिसने युधिष्ठिर के मन में भीम की मृत्यु का भ्रम उत्पन्न किया था; the founder of the materialistic school of philosophy, which rejected the authority of the Veda, denied the doctrine of transmigration and salvation, rejected all the means of knowledge except 979& or perception, maintaining that the body is the real soul, denying the existence of all that transcends the senses, and seeking the salvation in the dissolution of the body.
