present edition is an endeavour in this direction. By bringing together all or most of the different interpretations of the Řgveda in one place, an effort has been made to save the time and labour of the students of the Rgveda. It may be stated without hesitation or fear of contradiction that a comparison of different commentaries with a view to extract different or additional meanings is a rather laborious process. But time and labour involved have been spent without any grudge and quite cheerfully. If the present work satisfies the conditions laid down in the acid test and if it actually saves the time and labour of those who may study the Rgveda hereafter, I shall feel amply repaid.
