( 41 ) trates on the first word first, which he immediately explains. Then he explains the second, then the third, and so on. He does not revise his paraphrase of the first word in the light of the paraphrase of the second or third word or vice versa, with the result that numbers, genders, and cases sometimes do not harmonise with one another, in the paraphrase. There are several instances in which padas, i.e., parasmaipada or atmanepada are also confused. Probably VenkataMadhava's method is responsible for this confusion. A few cases of this kind are the following:
On p. 291, he first explains बृहतीइव as महती इव and then रोदसी by Marafeant. As far the explanation of individual words is concerned, it is correct. There can be no valid criticism. But in the text of the commentary, each word of explanation cannot be taken in an isolated form. Hecît becomes an epithet of aranyferont and does not harmonise with the latter. It should have been werut as it qualifies द्यावापृथिव्यौ. Similarly, on p. 381, नवेदाः is explained by अजानन् and यशस्वती: by अन्नवतीः। Here अजानन् does not go well with अन्नवतीः। I should like to read अजानत्यः। अन्नवत्यः। The following are a few instances of the confusion of the with FHÀG. On p. 533 line 5, He should be read for 37784764. On p. 535 line s, the reading should be faradinity for farading. I have proposed several emendations, see footnote 7 on p. 25, footnote 16 on p. 270, footnotes 4, 19, and 20, on p. 282, footnotes 16, and 20 on p. 284, footnotes 10, 12, and 19 on p. 291, footnotes 13, and 20 on p. 300, footnote 18 on p. 302 etc.
But I think, the text of the commentary is capable of further improvement. I propose therefore the following further emendations to the text of Venikața Mādhava's commentary:
