INTRODUCTION

about that time. He lived undoubtedly before the 14th century A.D., for he is mentioned by Mādhavācārya in the Sarvadarśanasamgraha (chapter on Jaina darśana).
In the Parikşāmukha-laghuvṛtti Anantavīrya mentions numerous philosophers and philosophical systems and quotes several important couplets which have yet to be identified. It is interesting to note that Vidyānanda's Āptapariksă' is mentioned as an old work while his Āptamīmāmsälankāra (also called Astasähasrī) is designated as Devāgamálankāra or simply Alankāra.3
Besides Anantavīrya's work, there is another very excellent commentary on the Pariksämukha-sūtra called Prameya-kamalamārtaņda by a Digambara logician named Prabhācandra whose date is generally assigned at the first quarter of the 9th century A.D.* Prabhācandra who was a disciple of Padma Nandi speaks of Māņikya Nandi * and Akalanka Deva? in very high terms.
