Among the principal aims and objective of establishing the Nava Nālandā Mahāvihāra by the late Bhikshu Jagadīsh Kashyap was to publish the entire Pāli-Tipitaka texts and their commentaries and to compile an authentic Pāli-Hindi dictionary. To materialise the objectives, the Nava Nālandā Mahāvihāra published for the first time the entire Pāli-Tipitaka texts in Devanāgari script in 1955-56 during the 2500th year of Buddha-Jayanti which was observed in pomp and grandeur in India and abroad. This publication gave a golden opportunity to the people in general to know about the Buddha and his teachings lost in India several centuries ago. Thereafter, the Nava Nālandā Mahāvihāra took up the project of publishing the PāliAtthakathās or the commentaries written on the Tipitaka texts. As a result in due course many volumes of the Pāli-Atthakathās were published. Side by side Sāsanavamsa and Mahāvamsaţikā also have been published. All these had been possible by the noble and generous attitude and sincere dedication of the late Ven. Jagadish Kashyap, the founder and Director of the Nava Nālandā Mahāvihāra and also by the dedicated co-operation of his teamcolleagues. Unfortunately, in his life time, Ven. Kashyapji could not materialise his noble dream of compiling an authentic Pāli-Hindi dictionary. The present dictionary is an attempt to fulfil his dream and mission.
To make this institute, an international centre for the study of Pali and Buddhist Studies, the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, came forward in 1994 and took up the Mahāvihāra along with its assets and liabilities and gave it a status of an autonomous institution. This apart, the Central Govt. has already taken various measures for the overall development of the Mahāvihāra. One of them is to compile an authentic Pāli-Hindi dictionary. Ven. Jagadish Kashyap had been the main source of inspiration for this dictionary project. Dr. Achārya Satyanārāyan Goenka also has always been inspiring this centre by his noble blessings and advice to see this Dictionary project a great success. Dr. Goenkaji established Vipassanā Research Institute (V.R.I.) at Igatpuri (Nasik, Maharastra) wherefrom entire Pāli-T'ipitaka texts, their Atthakathās and Tikās of Chatthasangāyana edition were published in Devanāgari script and CD Rom for the good and welfare of the people in general as well as for the meditators, Pāli students of all categories, the Pāli teachers and the researchers of Indology, As the Tipitaka texts, their Athakathās, Mūlatīkās and Țikās are available in their entirety in the Igatpuri edition, the present dictionary has been utilising the V.R.I. Igatpuri edition of Pāli texts only in its Pāli-Hindi dictionary. To propagate the real nature of Dhamma in Hindi is the glorious task which has been flourished by the noble inspiration and blessings of Dr. Goenkaji. Behind the compilation of the present dictionary Goenkaji's heartfelt desire actively worked as he knew it well that to propagate the noble message of Dhamma among the Hindi-speaking people, the Pāli-Hindi dictionary would be an inevitable medium.
The present Päli-Hindi dictionary will serve two purposes: (i) it will fulfil the longcherished desires of the students and the researchers; (ii) it will quench the thirst of the common people interested in knowing the ambrosia-like Dhamma of the Buddha. Keeping all these in mind and considering the necessity and expectations of those, who will use this dictionary, very useful and choicest words have been collected from the Pāli-Tipitaka and Anupitaka literature and included in the dictionary with their proper meanings and real interpretations.
