2. Adopting the reading Arahamta-pasādāya, one may translate with Sten Konow and Lüders: "In honour of;" and adopting Arahamta-pasadayam, one may translate: "By the grace of the Arhat or Arhats, this (cave)."

3. The word sampanata is equated with the Sk. sampannatma, which literally means "self-endowed," "one whose self has prospered by the attainment of desired objects." For the meaning sampannatma, cf. Chandogya Upanisad, VIII. 3: Yam yam antam abhikamo bhavati, yam kamam kamayate so'sya samkalpäd eva samuttisṭhati, tena sampanno mahiyate. Sankara explains sampanna thus: abhipretârthapraptya ca sampanno.
4. L[a]laka or Lalarka means "glorious like the rising sun," apparently as an earlier synonym of Baladitya. For the use of Lalaka as a biruda, cf. Yasalalaka-Tissa occurring in the Mahāvamsa (XXXV. 50) as the name of a king of Ceylon. But it may not be going too far to treat Lalaka. as a local epithet signifying that Hastisäha or Hastisimha was the sun of Lala."
