word 'swarûpa' which signifies 'Bramha' would not be used in saluting God by a follower of any other school of philosophy except a Vedantin. Besides while explaining the relation of Upalakshana he has alluded to the relation of Máyá with Bramha. At the end of the Vivarana he states that the Mahavidya verses were explained by older authors before him.' So he may have flourished after Sivá ditya (A.D. 975-1025).
Bhuvansundara mentions a Brihadvritti (a larger commentary) on the Mahavidyasútra, 3 But nothing is known about it.
Thus we have tried to give a short account of the authors and their works published in this volume together with a few historical notes on other authors connected with those works in one way or other, hoping that they may be of use to researchers in Sanskrit literature.
I must now sincerely acknowledge the valuable assistance rendered to me by my friend Mr. T. M. Tripathi, B. A. of Bombay by making a loan of his two manuscripts and by furnishing information about Bhuvanasundara's date, place &c.

Following is the description of the Manuscripts used for collation in preparing this edition:
--Belongs to the Central Library at Baroda. This is the first copy of Mahavidya-vivarna, Folios 1 to 15. Size 9x 4 inches, with 9 lines on each side. It is written on old rough paper. The writing is indifferent. It does not contain the 3 Mangala verses at the commencement. There are many oniissions and mistakes made by the copyist. It begins with a TUT17 and ends with stra
