The controversy about the eternity or otherwise of sound existed from a very ancient time between the Mîmánsakas on one hand and the Vaiseshikas Naiyáyikas, Buddhists &c. on the other. This is evident from Jaimini's Mimánsá sätra,? Sabara's Bhashya, Kumárila's Slokavártika, Párthasarathi Misra's Sástradipika+ and a number of works on Mîmáusa in which a separate Adhikarana, generally known as the 'śabdanityatádhikarana,' is devoted to prove the eternity of sound and refute the contrary arguments of the Naiyáyiks, Buddhists &c. On the other hand the view of the Mîmánsakas is criticized by the Vaiseshikas in Kanada's Vaišesbika sútra, Prasastapada's Bhashya, Sridhara's Nyáyakaudali &c. and by the Naiyáyikas in Gotama's Nyáyasûtra, Vátsyayana's Nyáyabháshya, Udyotakara's Nyáya-vârtika, Váchaspati Miśra's Nyáyavártika-tátparya-tîká,' Jayanta Bhatta's Nyáya-Manjari* &c. Sankara Misra alludes to this controversy in his Vádivinoda."1 Thus the cou. troversy about the eternity of sound has been carried on by the Mîmánsá and the Nyaya and Vaiseshika schools of philosophy even in later books. And as stated in the above Aryá, Yougáchárya who was a follower of the Vaiseshika or the Naiyáyika school seems to have revived the controversy by inventing the metlod of Mahavidya syllogisms to refute the eternity of sound maintained by the Miniánsakas. The word Yougâcharya appears to be an honorific of Kularka Pandita who according to the statements of both Vádîndra and Bhuvanasundara is the author of the Mahavidyá Kárikás.
Vádîndra has explained and supported the Mahavidya syllogisms in the first chapter of his Mahavidya-vidambana, although he has refuted them in the second and third chapters. He says that his efforts in the expositions of these syllogisms have a two-fold object viz. firstly, it would remove the impression of the Mahavidyavádí that his opponents do not understand the Mahavidyá syllogisms, and secondly, a disputant whose resources fail him during a discussion for want of accurate reasoning may employ the Mahavidya
