PREFACE
As a student of Sanskrit Hons., at my B. A ( 1928 ), I was well acquainted with the Gita Govinda of Jayadeva. When the manuscript of the Gita-Vítarāga (GV) belonging to my uncle, described as S below, fell in my hands, I felt much interested in it; but it contained only the bare text, without any commentary to explain it. Anyway my desire to study it continued. In 1938, I received a transcript of GV from Mysore through the good offices of my friend Shri N. Anantarangacharya. When Dr. Hiralalji Jain noticed my interest in it, he gave me his copy, in 1939. A little later, I borrowed the Arrah manuscript of GV with the Kannada Commentary. I wanted to see, if I get a Sanskrit Commentary of GV anywhere.
A good edition of the GV was weighing on my mind. I placed all my material at the disposal of two of my friends, but they did not show much interest in it. Somehow, this material was kept aside by me for many years, due to other pre-occupations. Later, I contributed a paper "The Gitavitarăga of Panditācārya" to the Journal of the Shivaji University, Kolhapur, 1969. At last, without waiting any more for getting a Sanskrit Commentary, I decided to edit the text myself, using the material which I had in my hands.
The Introduction describes the manuscript material and gives available details about Panditācārya, the author, who wrote it at Śravana Beļagola, in c. 1400
