nābhi, 9 Lord of Sarvărthasiddhi, and, at last, he was born as 10 Vrşabha, the son of Nabhiraja of Saketa, and came to be endowed with infinite vision, knowledge, power and happiness ( ananta.catusțaya ) ( 1-3).
When Mahabala was ruling, assisted by his four ministers (Svayambuddha, Mahāmati, Sambhinnamati and Satamati), at Alakā, the minister Svayambuddha enlightened him that his royal status, wealth, paraphernalia, pleasures etc, were all the fruits of his having practised Dharma ( 4, *1-8). Svayambuddha triumphantly refuted, through cogent arguments, the Ekānta, Sünya and other views held by other ministers. Thus he achieved his object of correctly enlightening the king; and thereafter, proceeded to pay respects to the shrines of vinas on the mount Meru ( 5-6 ).
ii. Svayambuddha learnt there, from a great saint, how his master (i, e., king Mahābala ) had incurred a Nidana, or remunerative hankering, in his earlier birth; how he would one day be the first Tirthakara; and how his duration of life was short now. He returned to the metropolis and attended on the king, who was plunged in pleasures like a god, with a view to instructing him on the path of religion. He informed the king (as advised by the great saint that he (the king ) had a dream earlier night in which he was thrown in mud by his wicked ministers but was put on a jewelled seat by himself (Svayambuddha ): this enabled the king to see the light of religion within the short span of his remaining life ( 1-4). He appealed to the king ( 4, *1-8 ) to give up his possessions, relinquish all pleasures, eschew sinful
