But there is hardly any authority or cogency, for including the sciences of art, architecture, sculpture etc.-the Vāstu-śāstras and the silpa-śāstras, into the science of polity--the Arthasastra.
On the other hand, the preparation of the Gnomon sankunirmānam, and ascertaining by it the cardinal points (of the compass), the plotting of the ground-plan by means of the plumb and other lines Sutra-pāta etc., are really subjects, appertaining alike both to the Vedāngic-Jyautiņa, ( Kalpa ) śulva-sūtras, and the Silpa-śāstras, The Silpa-śāstras are therefore closely related to the Vedāngas and must be regarded as a Vedic Upānga.
The sulva-sūtraso2a form supplementary parts of the Kalpasūtras and prescribe rules for the construction of sacrificial Altars— Śulva having the sense of Rajju, cords for measurement of distances.
The two most important treatises of sul vasūtras are those of Baudhāyana and Apartamba. Two smaller treatises of later dates, are the Manava and the Maitrāyaṇīya salva-sūtras. There is also a Katyāyana śulva Parisista, belonging to the śukla Yajuş.626
