The stotra consists of a collection of names all preceded by the adjective mahat. It is called astotturaśatanāma in one of the introductory verses as well as in the colophon of the following MS. Beginning :
कल्पद्रमवने रम्ये रत्नसिंहासनोपरि।
उमया सहितं रुद्रं पप्रच्छ नन्दिकेश्वरः ॥ Beginning of the stotra proper :
महती चेतना माया महादेवो महेश्वरी ।
महाबुद्धिर्महाचण्डौ महाकाली महाकला ॥ Colophon :
इति रुद्रयामले भैरवतन्त्रे श्यामास्तोत्रं संपूर्णम् ।
