________________ Shri Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra www.kobatirth.org Acharya Shri Kailassagarsuri Gyanmandir Advaitaratnakośapürani (Nos. 7505-6) and Tattvacintamanyåloku spbūrti (Nos. 6995-7) 22. BHATTOJIDIKSITA. Bhattoji Dikgita, the great Vaiyakarapu acclaims himself as a direct disciple of Appaya Dikpits. The southern recension of the meeting of Bhattoji and Appays runs as follows. Bhattoji was bound for the south to visit the great shrine of Ramešvara. Whilst at Cidambaram, Bhaltoji happened to attend a class in Vyakarana held by Appaya Dikṣita. It is said that during the conrse of his lecture, Appaya Was explaining to his pupils seme of the knotty points in Bhat. toji's works with his running commentary thereon, sometimes agreeing with Bhattoji's view and at other times criticising him. Bhattoji, without disclosing his identity, seems to have volanteered cortain explanations by way of substantiatiog some of bis Cwn conclusions, Whilst this wordy combat was progressing Appaya seems to have exclaimed with an ironical sneer, whother he was the great Bhattoji bimself, more prepared for the negative reply. To Appaya's surprise, Bhattoji bowed bis head and said that he was Bhattoji bimself. Bhattoji was so mucb struck with Appaya Dikaitar's great mastery over the Pūrva and the Uttara Mimämsa Sástras that be requested Appaya to condescend to initiate hiin in those. Whereupon, local tradition hath it that Appaya asked Bhattoji to proceed first to Ramešvaram and there to renove big moustaches etc. as unbecoming of an orthordox brahmin and said that on his return journey, Appaya would await bim with pleasure to teach him what he knew. And in due course Appaya taught Bhattoji the two Mfmämasas. The Northern recension of this incident tells us that Appaya Dekşita met Bhattoji during the former's visit to Benares. Whichever recension is relied upon, it is quite clear that these two great Dikşitars did meet, were contemporaries and tbat Bhatt oji was considerably younger to Appaya Dikuitar. Bhattoji is the author of Sabdakaustubha (Nos. 6467-18), Siddhånta kaumudi (Nos. 5485-5558); Praudhamanoramå (555492) Grabapašrāddhavidhi (No. 11893) For Private and Personal Use Only
