PREFACE TO THE DETAILED
CONTENTS OF VOL. XVII. The Gșhyasūtras of each of the Sākhâs of the four Vedas generally fall under the Kalpasūtras of the respective Sakbås. Each dā khã has got a Kalpasūtra which is generally divided into the Srautaaütra, Gịnyasūtra, Sulbasūtra etc. The Srautasūtras and the Bulbasūtras have already been described in the fourth volume. The Grhyasūtras with the bhäpyas and other commen: taries are described in the present velune.
ĀSVALAYA NAGRAYASUTRA. This Gșhyasūtra, followed by the Rg-Vedin is described in Nos. 11788-18.
The most important works based on these sūtras, and which are described in the following pages are:
1. Āsvalávadagrhyakärikå --This is hy Kamărilabhatta, the famous Mimangaka of the 7th century A. D. and the author of the Sloka and Tantra Vårtikas and the Tuptikå etc. That Kumärila wrote on the Kalijagūtra branch of Sanskrit literature is evident from the Mänavabrautavyākhyā and the Asyalāyanagrbyakārika (Nos. 11749– 5?.)
Four different commentaries on the Asvalāyansgļhyasūtra are preserved in this Library. They are by:
1. DEVASVĀMIN. Devasvimin is an old writer on several branches of Vedic literature. His coinmentary on the Rg-Veda is still reported to exist in Kasb nir. The Sankarşaņa kāņdabbágy& of this author is available in Ms. form in several libraries. His commentary on the Āsvalâ yana kalpa is also available. Three copies of the Grhyavyakhyā are available in this library. (Nos. 11754-56.) The author belongs t) a boat tas 3,4 satiry A. D.
