KÄTYĀYANA.
The earliest commentator on the Apädbyāylis Katyāyada, the author of the Värttikas. It is indeed noteworthy that even earlier than Katyayana, who is reforred generally to the 4th century B. O. there have been other commentators on the Sūtras though their works have not been spared to us at this distance of time. Katyāyana's alone has come down to us, on account probably of the fact that this alone clainned some sort of atten. tion at the hands of the Mahâbhâsyakära. Tradition regards this author as an elder contemporary and a near kineman of the author of the Mahābhi ya.
PATANJALI.
The greatest luminary in the realm of graminar is perhaps this very familiar figure, Patanjali. Author of several treatises on diverse subjects, like medicine, yoga etc., bis magnum opus is the Mahabhágya, a coinmentary in turn, at least in name, on the Värttikas of Kātyāyana. A tradition, banded down to us from tbe days of Bhartrbari, the author of the Vákyapadlya, makes the author of the Mahābbágya identical with the composer of the Yoga Sūtras and it has been questioned of late by modern critics. Neither school has yet landed upon any conclusive epi. donce to settle the dispute finally. According to Dr. Bhandarkar th, Mahābhāpyakára was a contemporary of the Sunga King Pugyamitra who reigned in the first quarter of the second contury B. C. The date of Patañjali is thus C. 180 B. C. Copies of the Mahâbhâsya are described under Nos. 5857-5983.
