This Volume contains the description of 646 manuscripts in tho Vyakaraga section. These fall into the following distinct olassos: -- I. The Artādhyāys, the Värttikas and the Mahābhāøya and
works that are directly cornmentaries on these. II. The Supplements to Pāņini's sūtras and commentaries
thereon. III. Independent and later recasts of the Sūtras. IV. Dissertations on special topics. V. Works on the Grammar of other Systems and languages.
We shall here briefly review the authors and works noticed in the descriptions in this Volume.
PĀNINI.
Pāṇini, it is well known is the firet systematic Grammarian, wbose work, the Astādhyāys is still the marvel of the whole world. Written more than 8800 years ago acccording to the most moderate estimate, it is still a work, not superseded by others. We owe to Dr. Goldstucker an approximate estimate of the date of Papini. His famous monograph on Panini is a mine of information and gives us all the particulars regarding Pånini. Copies of the Amadbyāys are described under Nos.: 5326-5366,
