This Vrata consists in lighting up two sacred lamps, one fod with oil and another with ghee, on the days when the sun passes from one zodiacal sign to another. This Vrata is considered to have the power of enabling one to reach the world of Visnu or Śiva according as he worships the former or the latter. Beginning: अथ संक्रान्तिव्रतदीपोद्यापनविधिरुच्यते--.
सङ्कान्तौ पञ्च वर्षाणि आज्येनैकं द्वितीयकम् ॥ तैलेनोभयदीपाभ्यां कारयेदिष्टसिद्धये । कृत्वैवं पञ्चवर्षे च पुण्ये काले शुचिव्रतः ॥
एवं पञ्चसु वर्षेषु यदि स्त्री यदि वा पुमान् ।
दीपव्रतसमाप्तौ तु कुर्यादुद्यापनं व्रती ॥ End:
कुर्यात् स्वीकृत्य विप्राणामाशीर्वचनमुत्तमम् । ततो भुक्त्वा स्वयं धीमान् बन्धुभिस्स्वजनस्सह ॥ एवं यः कुरुते भक्त्या नारी वाथ सुवासिनी ।
धनार्थी प्रामयाद्रव्यं पुत्रार्थी पुत्रमाप्नयात् ।। Colophon :
