CLASS VIII.-RELIGION--(continued). (7) VRATA AND VRATAKALPA.
The Vratas are mainly the vowed worship of certain deities with the object of propitiating them and attaining certain ends kept in view. These rites are prescribed in the Puranas and are observed chiefly by women, and consist of fasting, worshipping the intended deity and feeding the Brahmins
It is prescribed that, after observing any Vrata for a definite period, one should complete the course by means of a ceremonial called Udyapana, the chief features of which are: (1) consecration of vessels of water in which the deity worshipped is invoked to be present, (2) fire-offerings, (3) hospitality and obeisance to Brahmin couples, and (4) ten kinds of gifts Generally there is narrated a legendary tale illustrating the importance of each Vrata.
