THIS descriptive catalogue prepared under the orders of the Government of Madras is the first of its kind. relating to Tamil manuscripts. It has been prepared mainly on the lines of the Sanskrit descriptive catalogue. To a brief description of the manuscript containing the work under notice is added a very brief indication of the nature of the subject dealt with in the work, and extracts from the work itself are given to enable one to obtain an idea of its nature, style and value. In order to make the catalogue useful even to those who have not much knowledge of English, a brief description of every work in Tamil is also given after the extracts.
The system of transliteration used in the Catalogue is the same as for Sanskrit, the special sounds peculiar to Tamil being however denoted by separate symbols. They are given below. As transliteration is intended chiefly to help the reader in the matter of pronunciation, words are here transliterated in accordance with their actual sound-value, and not so as to suit the imperfect Tamil letters used in writing them.
There is some difference of opinion in regard to the pronunciation of the Sanskrit words used in the Tamil language; and this has led to a certain want of uniformity in transliterating those words. To avoid the difficulty consequent upon this want of uniformity, the
